“Memes. The DNA of the Soul” - Monsoon, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
The term ‘meme’ is one commonly misused on the internet. A lot of people seem to think that if they take a random image, then slap some ‘funny’ text on it that they’ve made a hilarious meme XDDDDDDDD OMG lol. However what they’ve just created is an image macro. A meme is an idea, a behaviour or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. For something to be a meme it has to have some cultural context. Calling a photo an SR20, for example is a meme, it is an in-joke that’s relevant to Oppo. If I went anywhere else on the internet and called a photo an SR20 people would just call me an idiot. This also applies to other places.
On some places on the internet there is a meme where someone posts a gif of Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z having anal sex with Vegeta and people will respond with ‘Thanks, doc’ or some variation of such or in other places posting pictures of Finnish actor Spede Pasanen. Both of us make little sense outside of their cultural context and would not be memes without it.
Ever wonder why people get tired of seeing old or more ‘mainstream’ memes? When a meme grows to such levels of popularity it loses that all important context and is generally spouted out by 10 year old kids or middle aged adults thinking they are at the height of humor. Once this happens a meme loses its humorous aspects and just becomes pixels on a screen, meaningless. This is why places such as 4chan get annoyed when memes created in their board cultures are spread to places like reddit or facebook where they may be seen as funny but they are not memes there. Rage faces suffered a similar fate when they became embedded in the mainstream lexicon, more recent examples would be MLG parodies or Pepe. Pretty soon they will be as high up on the cringe factor as things like doge or nyan cat.
Yeah, I know this wasn’t very automotive related so I’ll post this F6.
